In Afrikan culture, drums are seen as connectors to the ancestors. Broken drums are therefore symbolic of a broken connection. In repairing drums we are physically repairing our relationship with those who came before us and to whom we owe our existence. This is at the heart of Ukombozii Ancestral Drums.
Afrikan people are at a low point in our history. Outsiders came to Afrika to steal all that was ours. When we resisted, they unleashed genocidal scale violence against us. They then shamelessly lied claiming they slaughtered, subdued and stole from us for our own good. To cap it all, some of us assisted them.
All of this means that we are a people in need of healing. The drum has great therapeutic value for human beings. We therefore want to deploy them to help bring healing to our people as part of the Afrikan liberation process.
Ukombozii means liberation in the Swahili language and incorporates our desire to heal our Afrikan selves. Ancestral expresses our desire to build healthy respect for our ancestors and Drums are the medium through which we will do both. Hence the name: Ukombozii Ancestral Drums.
